Our Garden

Students working in the gardenIn 2010, Community School applied for and won several grants and succeeded in building a garden adjacent to the school building. Families pitched in to build a fence, enrich the soil, and plant vegetables, herbs, and ornamentals.

In the fall of 2010, all the students helped with our first major vegetable harvest and enjoyed the stone soup prepared by parent volunteers. The teachers are incorporating the garden into the curriculum with biweekly activities in the garden on a seasonal basis. Students gain hands-on experience with planting, maintaining, and harvesting while learning about plants, life cycles, soil, pests, and the joys of eating fresh produce.

One of our parents designed and built a greenhouse for our garden area which allows us to plant seed starts in the winter months.
